“I am delighted to hear the news that it is now official: Malawi has removed the risk of trachoma across the country,” The Countess of Wessex has said on #CommonwealthDay
HRH The Countess of Wessex has written an open letter to the people of Malawi this Commonwealth Day, to congratulate them on the incredible achievement of removing the risk of trachoma across the country. HRH is Vice-Patron of @qejubileetrust, an organisation which works across the Commonwealth to end avoidable blindness. The Countess visited Malawi in 2017 to learn more about the country’s efforts to eliminate trachoma, an infectious eye disease that can lead to blindness.
Thanks to the efforts of Malawi’s Ministry of Health, organisations within the International Coalition for Trachoma Control, and local communities, the people of Malawi are no longer at risk of going blind from trachoma.
“Since I visited Malawi in 2017, all 53 Commonwealth countries have committed to take action towards achieving accessible eye health for all, and to eliminate trachoma as a public health problem by 2020.
