We’re going to the Moon to stay.

When scientists and engineers brainstorm landing site locations for future lunar missions - robotic or human - they must consider numerous factors. Some of these factors are related to the technology and equipment that will land the mission on the Moon and others are related to the scientific and resource interest of a location.

NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter or LRO is a robotic mission that has been exploring the Moon for nearly 10 years. LRO observations have enabled numerous groundbreaking discoveries, creating a new picture of the Moon as a dynamic and complex body. These developments have set up a scientific framework through which to challenge and improve our understanding of processes throughout the solar system.

Images from the LRO camera, as well as the data from other instruments aboard the spacecraft, provide scientists and engineers the means to study the lunar surface at high-resolution so that future missions can take advantage of the truly rich geology of the Moon.
