‘Every portrait is like a love affair.’ ? Maggi Hambling is known for her intimate portraits of loved ones. Frances Rose was the artist's next-door neighbour in Battersea, who Hambling adored, and who greatly enjoyed sitting for this portrait. Mrs Rose was a widow in her eighties at the time of this painting; according to Hambling she commonly wore this blue dress and always had a clip in her hair.
