Photo by @simonnorfolkstudio I The black volcanic sand of Khalaktyrsky Beach in the Kamchatka peninsular, Russian Far East, with Cape Nalychevo on the horizon. The iron, vanadium and titanium-rich sand lies 20m (65ft) deep and the beach stretches for 30km (19miles). Towards the end of the Second World War Kamchatka and its beaches served as a launch site for the invasion of the Kuril Islands and after the war the Soviet military designated the area a military zone: it remained closed to Soviet citizens until 1989 and to foreigners until 1990.
