Every year, over a thousand people come to climb Everest. And every year, the climb is made possible by countless seemingly nameless individuals like Norbu. The infrastructure of Himalayan climbing is built, quite literally, on the backs of people like him. Norbu shoulders a bag of freshly chopped glacial ice, which will be melted for water. This is a trip he makes roughly 10 times a day for around six weeks. I will be attempting a new route on Everest this spring, and it’s people like Norbu make climbs like mine possible.
