Photo by @michaelchristopherbrown | Children play football in the remote village of Obo, Central African Republic (CAR), located near the borders of South Sudan, to the east, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to the south. Africa’s pole of inaccessibility, one of the toughest places on the continent to reach, is also near Obo. In 2017, after the U.S. and Uganda concluded counter-LRA (Lord's Resistance Army) efforts and began withdrawing special-forces soldiers from the region, Obo and other southeastern CAR communities were left largely unprotected. Since then, armed groups have carried out attacks on these communities, often targeting people based on their religious or ethnic identity or their livelihood.
