Not only have I loved this brand ever since they launched their campaign for real beauty, but today I got goosebumps and nearly cried when they unveiled their latest #ShowUs campaign. Let me tell you all about it... ❤  Dove have spent years working with researchers to find out about beauty ideals and uncovered some interesting statistics: In a nut shell, most of us do not feel represented in beauty images, 7/10 women feel pressurised to achieve an unrealistic beauty image; and these unrealistic ideals are having a detrimental effect on women around the world. 😧  Dove has recognised the damaging effect beauty standards are having on women's self esteem, so they wanted to do something  to create systematic change and have created something for ALL brands and media to use (even their competitors). 👏  Dove have spent the last two years working with some amazing people at Getty and Girl Gaze to create over 5000 images of female-identifying and non binary women from 39 countries and counting. Each image is taken by 1 of 116 female identifying or non binary photographers from Girl Gaze - they used local photographers in each country so they understand the beauty stereotypes of their country, and then break them down. 🌍  This image library, like others, is where the media and advertisers go to get stock photos to put into articles. Here's a fact that shocked me: only 5% of images we see in the media of women are taken by women. We see ourselves through the male gaze. This image library is un-photoshopped and represents women of all sizes, shapes, races and shows disabilities, scars, freckles. Everything. Imagine how it would effect our self esteem if we ALL felt represented. 💁🏼‍♀️ The thing that stuck with me the most is this: the media shouldn't profit from us feeling bad about ourselves and needing to buy things to make us feel more beautiful.
