This large and lavishly adorned earring was probably made in the 3rd century BC by the Etruscans, who lived in the western part of what is now central Italy.
At around 10cm tall and weighing over 360g, it would have been too heavy and impractical for daily wear. Instead, it might have been worn as part of a pair for ceremonies or funerals. The hanging pendants include a female head, two pomegranates and two vases.
See this stunning object and learn more about the Etruscans in Room 71.

Beautifully crafted earring! But I imagine that its weight must’ve really stretched a woman’s poor earlobes!

Their goldsmiths could match anything done today. We must never fall victim to our own hubris.

360g as earring? Maybe worn as hair- or headpiece..?
