Swipe to see the colours change✨👉 The Lycurgus Cup is the only complete example of colour-changing dichroic glass to survive from ancient Rome.
The dazzling effect is achieved because the glass contains nanoparticles of gold and silver – this makes it turn from opaque green to translucent red when light is shone through it. Made in the 4th century, the cup is decorated with a high-relief design depicting a mythical story where Lycurgus, king of Thrace, is trapped in the branches of a vine.
You can see this marvellous object in Room 41.
