These boat-shaped earrings are decorated with sirens – creatures from ancient Greek mythology with the body of a bird and the head of a woman. According to myth, the irresistible song of the sirens lured sailors to their death on the craggy rocks where the mythical creatures perched.
The earrings also feature cockleshell pendants which were associated with the goddess of love, Aphrodite.
They were probably made around 420–400 BC in Athens – discover more about the ancient city and see these objects on display in Room 19.
