Right before these cactuses bloom, Greg Krehel (@echinopsisfreak) is ready. 🌵 🌺 👀 Five years ago, Greg transformed one of his bathrooms into a studio for photographing Echinopsis, a type of cactus from South America known for its flowers. “The colors of the flowers are so intense that you literally can’t look at them for extended periods without averting your eyes,” he says.
Greg currently has over 100 Echinopsis in his Jacksonville, Florida, home — but not all are ready for the spotlight. They bloom only once a year, so he has to keep a close watch. “The tip off is that the buds will double in size each day the last few days before they bloom,” explains Greg. His time-lapse videos are made up of hundreds of still images taken 30 seconds apart, and it can take anywhere from 12 hours to a few days to get the full bloom.
