Billie Holiday was known for her soulful voice. Her popular song “God Bless the Child” went on to sell over a million copies.  One of her best known songs, “Strange Fruit,” calls attention to lynching in America, with haunting lyrics like “Southern trees bear strange fruit, blood on the trees and blood at the root.” Originally published as a poem by Abel Meeropol in 1937, Holiday first recorded the song in 1939. The song continued to resonated decades after its first recording. In 1999, Time magazine named “Strange Fruit” the best song of the century. In 2002, @librarycongress added it to the National Recording Registry.  Despite the continued resonance of “Strange Fruit,” when she died in 1959 at age 44 she only had 70 cents in the band. Sixty years later, her words live on, both in recordings of her own music and in many, many covers.
