During the early months of a polar bear's life, the bond between mother and offspring is essential for the cub's cognitive and emotional development. The bond between mother and child, and between sibling and sibling, is very strong. It’s the only social structure scientists recognize and have identified in a species that is solitary for much of its adult life. Wrestling, chasing, play-fighting, cuddling, and napping together are all part of daily life for a young bear. The cubs' games prepare them for life later on. Once weaned, the siblings will stay together for a while, hunting and playing. Mother bears are extremely patient with their cubs, and allow them to jump, bite, and pirouette around her.
