❤️🐵 Happy #ZooLoversDay! As the Zoo’s great apes prepare to go to sleep, they make their beds, then settle in. Just like their wild counterparts, orangutans in zoos build cozy nests.
Keepers provide our orangutans with a variety of materials to create nests, including hay, leafy browse, cardboard, sheets, blankets, fleece and many other materials. They often incorporate enrichment items—such as milk crates—into their nests as well.
Interestingly, Bornean orangutan mom Batang has made larger and more well-cushioned nests since her infant Redd’s arrival. Sweet dreams, great apes! 💤
