Photo by @paulnicklen | Along the shores of Prins Karl Forland, in Svalbard, a bull walrus scours the ocean floor in search of clams. Walruses can dive for up to six to eight minutes and consume up to 4,000 clams a day. These massive pinnipeds are one of my favorite species to photograph in the Arctic and are also one of the most difficult. When feeding, walruses fan their flippers, which blasts water at the seafloor to expose clams. While it is fascinating to watch, visibility through my lens is seriously compromised by the dark and murky water. However, challenging shoots sometimes lead to the most rewarding results, and I was thrilled to share this moment with such an incredible animal. #FollowMe at @PaulNicklen for more #wildlife photography. #walrus #ocean #Norway #diving #wildlife
