International climate lawyer Farhana Yamin, former lead author of the IPCC, was arrested outside Shell's headquarters in London yesterday. A respected leader who has attended over 20 years of climate negotiations, Yamin allowed officers to arrest her while peacefully explaining her actions: "The legal process is pretty broken right now and we're having to break the law rather than make the law because of the inaction of 30 years now of these companies." Yamin is also a mother of four (see her husband and nine year old son reacting to her arrest in the third clip). She was taking part in Extinction Rebellion week calling on governments, media, institutions, corporations and individuals to take bold action to address the #ClimateEmergency and #EcologicalCollapse. While the world reacted to the devastating fire in Notre Dame, there was not a single mention of the devastating fires also burning across the Amazon. Climate change is not in some distant future. Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi are devastated by Cyclone Idai, in Syria, Libya and Yemen, climate chaos has contributed to brutal civil war, and in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador crop failure, drought and the collapse of fisheries have driven people from their homes. Let us be inspired and humbled by Farhana's brave actions. Let us all commit to doing our best to lead right now. Let us not wait for the perfect opportunity or the perfect words. None are coming. No scientific breakthrough or political leader is going to do the work for us. We have no time to wait.
