Yet, my path to SNL was a strange & interesting one. In 1995 I was asked to audition for SNL - they were replacing Sandler who was becoming a superstar and went on to do films. They wanted a young energetic white dude that could play guitar to replace Adam. I was an NYC comedian with my crew nightly doing gigs all over the city. My manager told me I had the best shot of getting the show bc they knew me and saw my performance. They understood I was a comedian locked into a new generation of comedy fans. I sat in front of Rockefeller Center on a bench. I never went in to the audition. I wasn’t ready for the behind the scenes on the show which I knew to be very competitive. I was not a person that wanted confrontation I just wanted to be funny. I passed and @jimmyfallon went in and got the job. I was happy for Fallon.. he was a tremendously funny comedian and worked his butt off, deserved it. He shined on the show while I went back on the road for years building my own fanbase. In 2004 I met Lorne Michaels at the Comic Strip where he and @stevemartintogo came to watch me perform. I spoke to Lorne after and said I would love to host the show. He explained to me that it wasn’t meant to be, he said comedians don’t host anymore not since early years with Carlin, Pryor & Martin (who still hosted but was a movie star at that point). Lorne & I spoke of me coming in for a solo season to jolt the show but that never transpired. Cut to a year plus later. Retaliation drops. Hit #4 on @billboard charts & skyrockets my visibility. Lorne called me personally to ask me to host SNL. I made it. I took the long way.. but MY long way and I hosted (twice) & fulfilled my childhood dream. I hosted as solely a comedian. I hit my mark and said it’s amazing to be here hosting Saturday Night Live. Nothing is impossible.
