When Saalumarada Thimmakka and her husband could not have children, she found a beautiful way of dealing with it, turning sadness into beauty for all her village and the environment. Thimmakka, now 108, planted over 300 banyan trees more than 80 years ago. Today they line the road between Thimmakka's village and the neighboring village in India. In this photo, she prays to the trees she planted so many years ago. After these initial banyan trees, Thimmakka began thoughtfully planting thousands of other kinds of trees in her community, earning her place as a global icon of environmental conservation. In 2016, Indian citizens like Thimmakka worked together across regions to plant 50 million trees in 24 hours, smashing the world record. Thimmakka has inspired countless people to act locally and globally to preserve the natural world. In March, India's President Ram Nath Kovind bestowed the prestigious Padma Shri Award on Thimmakka. It is the fourth highest civilian award in India.
