Photo by Martin Schoeller @martinschoeller | From an interview series I did on religious leaders in New York City. This is Rabbi Shlomo Kugel. Religion: Chabad Judaism. "The world seems to have a life of its own that contradicts the notion of a Creator; things seem to be random, things go in every which way and without rhyme or reason. The truth is that there is purpose and meaning in everything, even a leaf blowing deep in the forest. It's all part of God's master plan.
The world looks like a bad place in many ways. But every human being, every animal, every part of creation, is essentially a part of God's goodness. If you uncover that, the evil will melt away.
Science does that in a very clear way. The deeper we get into the beauty of the human body or of the cosmos, we are looking right at God. Some people see it as a contradiction. It's just the opposite." For more pictures and stories of religious leaders in NYC, follow me @martinschoeller
