I long for the status that comes with a seat at the “cool kids’ table” and there have been times in my life where I have contorted myself to fit what that “inner ring” demands in order to get the invitation. I’m telling you, when you change yourself to fit in a fancy club, there is no joy or belonging there, because at the end of the day, YOU aren’t there. Some false version of yourself is, and as @brenebrown puts it, “The opposite of belonging is fitting in”. There are versions of this inner circle everywhere, in every stage of life and in every profession. In churches and parent groups. In Hollywood and Academia. From preschool to PhD programs. There’s this false narrative that promises that if I just make it into that circle, then I will belong, and I will matter. CS Lewis is saying that chasing the inner ring will break our hearts unless we break its hold over us. He’s saying that if we simply choose to remain in the present moment, doing the thing we love to do with people we like, and let go of the end result, we will find ourselves almost by accident, “snug and safe” in our own inner circle of belonging. And that’s where the good stuff is. No status or exclusive fancy-pants club can touch the joy and creativity that bursts out of that place. Is there an "inner ring" you are chasing? Release it and create your own. And let yours be warm and welcoming because I guarantee you, someone else nearby is also looking for a place to belong.
