Today is #InternationalSculptureDay! We're getting dizzy with excitement in Tate Modern's #FranzWest exhibition. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This sculpture 'Schlieren' 2010 was based on a doodle, while other works by West resemble body parts or excrement. The Austrian artist saw these playful sculptures as an alternative to what he considered pompous or pretentious public sculptures.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
West believed that the viewer should engage with works through interactive play, and maintained throughout his career that 'it doesn't matter what the art looks like but how it's used.' Get hands-on with replicas of West's work in the exhibition, with objects he designed to make the viewer appear both playful and awkward. For West, these works could function like extensions of the human body. He believed that the way people used them gave external expression to their deepest neuroses and desires.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Discover more of the highlights from the exhibition in today's story - and just swipe up to book your tickets! Open until 2 June.
