The Vallerano necropolis outside Rome contained more than 100 burials, mostly dated to the mid- to late second century. Tomb 2 belonged to a young woman, and similarities with comparable burials suggest that she was very likely from a family of Syrian origin. This diamond ring is extraordinary: it is one of the earliest surviving examples of jewelry set with a diamond in the world, and the only one known from ancient Rome. ⠀

See it on view in "The World between Empires: Art and Identity in the Ancient Middle East," on view through June 23. #WorldbetweenEmpires https://met.org/2GrGARt⠀
