At latitude 28 degrees in the Atlantic Ocean, these volcanic islands of Spain are only 100-500 km away from the northwestern coast of Africa. The earliest human inhabitants of the islands are still a mystery but when the Europeans began to explore the Canaries in the 14th century they encountered indigenous people living at Neolithic level, possibly with a common origin of the Berbers in Sahara.
