Photo by @melissfarlow | When the song My Old Kentucky Home plays before the Kentucky Derby, I always shed a sentimental tear. My first day at work as a staff photographer years ago was race day. And for the next nine years I was part of a team that covered the hoopla and the crowds to photograph a dramatic two-minute race. I recall that the last Derby for the paper, I watched dark cloud move over the track five minutes before post time. Wind blew and a torrent of rain turned the track into a mud pit. When the horses ran by, I could hardly see them through a long lens. The two photographs here were made several years later when I was back in Kentucky for a National Geographic magazine story on thoroughbred horses. After weeks on the farms it was Derby Day at Churchill Downs. With the help of veteran photographers, I set up cameras for the race to fire by remote. After lying on the ground practicing the shot, I made my way through security, up the elevator to the air-conditioned clubhouse. Hot and sweaty and looking very much out of place among the dressy crowd, I darted past the hallway of jockey portraits to the women’s bathroom to splash dirt off my face. Exiting into a sea of traditional Derby hats and finery, I decided the dark hallway was the perfect place to work until race time.
What strikes me thinking back on this day is that it was another month until I knew if either of these images worked. I sent in my film to Geographic where their lab processed and stamped it with coded information before sending it to my picture editor. It was my last assignment shaooting Kodachrome before switching to digital. If you watch the race this weekend, bet on the mudder. @ナショナルジオグラフィック @natgeofineart @natgeoimagecollection @courierjournal #kentuckyderby #derby #horses #kodachrome #churchilldowns #louisville #kentucky
