I started writing a book five years ago. I wrote the first words by the sea, in more pain than I’d ever imagined possible. A few days had passed since my best friend died. I had just had surgery because the moment she hit that truck on the highway, I collapsed in pain at an airport in another country. I’d spent the next nine hours in complete agony at the hospital. She spent the same hours dying. My pain went away the moment she died and when three days later I found myself with a notebook, I started writing her. I was still calling her phone every hour, not understanding why she wasn’t picking up. It felt like a joke I couldn’t comprehend; I was waiting for someone to tell me it was all a mistake, that they’d gotten it wrong, that it wasn’t true. But it was. She died. And there I was, sitting on a dock with my stomach covered in bandages, trying to talk to her. ⁣⁣

It took me five years to write this book because it took me five full years to wrap my head around the fact that I would never see her again. It wasn’t until the burial of her ashes in March this year that it actually sunk in: she’s gone. I’ll never hug her again. It took five years and me finally sitting on the edge of her grave, dangling my feet above her urn, for my heart to grasp that. ⁣⁣

And now it’s done. I finished the book. It’s coming out in September. I hope you will read it. I hope you will love it. ⁣⁣

In a way, I hope this book brings her back to life. That through these pages she will come alive and make her way into your hearts the way she will always live in mine.
