Tbt our first day at home. When @jessbebes were these 4-days-old little red beans. 🥰❤️❤️
.
I remember during those first days, my biggest concern was not about the postpartum pains, nor about the sleepless nights or the sticky hair. It was about my low breastmilk supply.
.
It’s because I’ve read a lot of legit stuffs during pregnancy that says breastfeeding has many health benefits for both mom and babies. So naturally, I decided to breastfeed the twins exclusively for at least 6 months.
.
But despite my effort to always nurse-on-demand, it wasn’t long (10 days exactly) until the doc told me to supplement with formula because she said my breastmilk was not enough for both babies to gain normal, healthy weights.
.
I felt incompetent for not being able to provide what my babies deserve. Not to mention that I failed to prove people around me who say hurtful things like:
“Your breastmilk is too watery / too few”
“It’s ‘just’ breastmilk, how do you expect the babies to get full?”
“Quick, give them some breastmilk (the babies were crying), they just want to suck something anyway”
.
But the comment that hurt me the most was: “How could you do this (trying to breastfeed exclusively) to your own babies??”, as if I’m some sort of crazy baby torturer when all I want is to provide the best for them, as their mother.
.
In regard to #MaternalMentalHealth Awareness week, I just want to remind you fellow moms out there that we CAN’T control what other people say to us, and maybe we can’t control how we feel about it (hormone cocktail, anyone?), but we CAN control what we do after we get that feeling, no matter how intimidating those comments can be. ❤️
.
P.S. I also learned that those harsh comments weren’t actually meant to hurt me. I believe most of these people just really care about my babies (and me), and they spoke out of their own experience & perspective. Here are my tips:
• Some negative comments might be true. Don’t let it bring you down, instead, if it bothers you, do your own research or better yet, go to the doctor & ask about it
• Trust your maternal instincts
• Focus on what’s best (and what works) for you & your babies
Semangat, #PejuangASI! 💪😁
