Pearson, 71, is a great-great-grandfather and has lived in the neighborhood, a historic African-American community, since he was a child. Bread of Life, Inc., is a disaster relief organization serving communities in Houston that are still rebuilding their homes, and lives, two years after Hurricane Harvey. Since Hurricane Harvey the organization has distributed $45,000,000 in goods, clocked 7,500 volunteering hours, and served over 37,000 families. The organization hired contractors to repair Pearson’s roof. “They are the ones that gave me hope,” Pearson said of the help he’s received. Hurricane Harvey, a Category 4 storm, flooded over 150,000 homes and displaced more than 30,000 people in 2017.
