Painted on the fashionable island of Noirmoutier, Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s ‘La Promenade au bord de la mer (le Bois de la Chaise a Noirmoutier) from circa 1892 captures the artist’s affection for painting models with the natural beauty that surrounded him in the northwest of France. Having surfaced from a period of artistic crisis in the 1880s, Renoir returned to the soft renderings of his earlier Impressionist days. However, his later landscapes reflect a decorative idealization of his rural subjects as compared to his early works, which focused on the fleeting effect of light. On offer from The Metropolitan Museum of Art to benefit the institution’s European Paintings Acquisitions Fund, this dazzling canvas will highlight our Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale on 14 May in #NYC. #SothebysImpMod #SothebysBreakingGround #Renoir
