Photo @tommy.heinrich / On May 15th, 1995 we were only 5 climbers approaching the summit of Mount Everest. At 28,500 feet of elevation, after climbing all evening under the full moon, we were moving steadily six feet below the knife-blade South Eastern Ridge. I stopped on the steep slope to photograph the sun that was rising over the Tibetan plateau, and after taking a couple of frames turned around to place the camera in my belt-pack when I barely noticed that the full moon was about to set on the summit that Mount Everest’s shadow projected below us. But I was too low to take a picture of it. So I rushed, tightly held my ice-axe and moved forward as quickly as possible, and higher to get closer to the ridge. Breathless and panting, I was able to get only three frames before the moon disappeared behind the clouds and the horizon. To this day, 24 years after making this image, I continue to feel that it describes why I climb mountains. It takes effort, a lot of work and dedication, often times great risk to achieve your goals, but it takes passion to live Your dreams.

El 15 de mayo de 1995, tan solo 5 personas ascendíamos hacia la cumbre del Monte Everest. A 8.700 metros de elevación, tras escalar durante la noche Iluminada por la luna llena, avanzábamos incesantes dos metros bajo el filo Sud-Este. Me detuve en la empinada ladera de hielo para fotografiar el sol que se asomaba sobre el altiplano tibetano, y tras tan solo dos tomas giré para guardar la camara en el bolso, cuando noté que la luna llena se acercaba a la cumbre de la sombra que proyectaba el Monte Everest debajo nuestro. Pero estaba posicionado demasiado bajo para poder fotografiarlo. Me apresuré, sujetando firme la piqueta avance tan rápido como me resultó posible, hacia adelante y acercándome al filo. Agitado y sin aliento pude obtener tres imágenes antes de que la luna desapareciera entre las nubes y el horizonte. Aun hoy, a 24 años de haber tomado esta fotografía, siento que esta imágen describe porque asciendo montañas. Alcanzar un objetivo requiere gran esfuerzo, mucho trabajo y dedicación, muchas veces correr grandes riesgos, pero se necesita pasión para alcanzar los sueños.
