As a young artist in 1930s New York she discovered surrealism and the ‘limitless expanse of possibility’ it offered her. The movement explored the hidden workings of the mind as a source of art and writing. Tanning described a dream she once had of an endless succession of doors: ‘I do recall I had a dream about doors a long time ago, and those doors appeared in many canvases afterward. It was a horrible dream. I opened it and it was another door right behind it… And 'Door 84'? By this time, the door is the victim. Both people are pushing at that door. It's being pushed by both sides. Maybe it never should open.’ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The door became a surrealist symbol for Tanning, a portal to the unconscious. While the open door represents choice and possibility, doors may also be used to lock up our most secret fears and desires. Tanning’s dream influenced her work right up to this painting (above) in 1984 which is painted on a real door, dividing the composition in two.
