For most of its 176-year history, the Citadel, a military college in South Carolina, did not admit undergraduate women. That changed in 1995 with a Supreme Court ruling. But it wasn’t until last year that @thecitadel1842 appointed its first female regimental commander — in essence, the head of the student body — Sarah Zorn. @nytgender sent photographer @alyssaschukar to follow Sarah through her senior year as she sought to change the culture of an institution that had long denied entry to women. “I serve as a stepping stone for everything else that is going to come for the Citadel,” said Sarah.
