This grazing horse could not have been more perfectly placed, peacefully grazing as Armageddon approached. Not long after this was taken we were slammed by a wall of hail, it was so heavy that you could hear it approaching with a unique roar as it pummeled the landscape. The noise was so strange that no one in the group knew what it was until it was nearly upon us, wreaking havoc on the landscape. I can’t even begin to imagine what animals go through in these conditions, the pain must be excruciating in moments like this. Weather on the plains is erratic and explosive, from tornados to lightning to baseball size hail, life in the Midwest is extraordinary and often raw. It’s in these conditions where this unique and fleeting beauty lives and why #stormChasing is such a treasure hunt.
