Photo by @bertiegregory | A female sea otter rests with her pup at sunset on the west coast of Vancouver Island, Canada. The pup’s coat wasn’t thick enough yet to stay warm in the frigid Pacific ocean so I often saw it sat up out the water on top of the mother. These otters are a great conservation success story. After being hunted to near extinction on the British Columbia coast, they were reintroduced from Alaska. Now, the kelp forests that disappeared during the otter’s absence, have since rebounded providing habitat for countless other species. Many of these species provide food and jobs for numerous coastal communities. Looking after wildlife isn’t just a nice thing to do, we humans need it. In order to protect places and animals like this, we need to conserve 30% of the planet by 2030. #britishcolumbia #photography #wildlife #coast #otter
