Emma Chopova and Laura Lowena, of the label @chopovalowena, have garnered a lot of buzz recently for their colorful, blooming wool skirts. Available in long and short versions and suspended from thick leather belts dangling with carabiners and key chains, the one-off pieces come in shocks of citrus orange and earthy green, dotted with hand-embroidered Bulgarian patterns. The skirts are modeled on traditional Bulgarian dress. In the past, bent sticks were used to create pleats designed to warm the bodies of women who worked in the fields. “They’re based on an old-school Eastern European phrase about warming ovaries,” says Chopova.
