💔We are sad to share that our 12-year-old golden lion tamarin Mo died today, June 3. Veterinarians started treating Mo a few weeks ago after they found an abnormality in his cranial abdomen. A recent ultrasound revealed an untreatable tumor invading his vena cava, a vein that carries blood to the heart. Due to his rapidly declining condition and poor prognosis, keepers and veterinarians made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize him.
Mo was born at the Zoo and was part of the free-ranging golden lion tamarin program in 2007. He lived with his twin Mara before being paired with his mate Izzy. He and Izzy had one infant, Carolina, who was born in 2018. Golden lion tamarins live in family groups, and Mo was an excellent and attentive dad. He helped care for Carolina after she was born and could often be seen carrying her around until she was old enough to start exploring on her own. Carolina often sought him out for comfort when she was startled, even when she was no longer dependent on him.
Mo and his sister Mara started a tradition of golden lion tamarins snuggling up for a nap with Vlad, a two-toed sloth who shares an enclosure with the monkeys. He would often curl up for a nap on Vlad or ride along while Vlad moved from branch to branch.
Visitors can still see Carolina and Izzy at the Small Mammal House. Izzy will be paired with a new mate when the Species Survival Plan matches her with one.
Golden lion tamarins are endangered and there are approximately 3,000 in the wild. One third of the tamarins living in the Atlantic coastal forest in Brazil are descended from golden lion tamarins born in zoos and released to the wild, including some from the National Zoo.
