Today will see D-Day commemorations, attended by members of the Royal Family, continue 75 years to the day that troops landed on the beaches in Normandy.

We have uncovered materials from the archives relating to D-Day. 📷 3, taken in early June 1944, shows British Assault landing craft in mass formation move past a large vessel, saluting King George VI. The monarch was visiting the British Invasion fleet to wish godspeed to personnel taking part in the Normandy Landings.

The King said in a speech on D-Day: “Once again what is demanded from us all is something more than courage and endurance; we need a revival of spirit, a new unconquerable resolve.” Ten days after the D-Day landings which included over 5000 vessels and ships, nearly 11,000 planes and over 130,000 ground troops, King George VI crossed the channel to visit troops on the Normandy beachheads (📷2). The visit is captured in these newspaper clippings (📷1) from the Royal Archives.

The King later wrote to General Eisenhower speaking of his visit to the Normandy Beaches, saying: “I have visited the Beaches of Normandy, which will be forever famous. All that I saw, on my journey and on the soil of France, has moved me deeply... I come home feeling an intense admiration for all those who planned and organised so vast a project, and for the gallant and successful execution of it in all its varied phases by every one of those now engaged in this great battle.” Read The King’s draft message (📷4)
