These rare archive photos offer a glimpse of what the D-Day invasion of Normandy, the largest seaborne invasion in history, looked like from the Allies' perspective. When the Allies launched the battle 75 years ago, on June 6, 1944, military leaders knew it would be a turning point in the fight against Nazi Germany, so they documented it extensively. Professional photographers were embedded in various units, even some on the front lines. "This visual record brings it all to life and it really does put it into perspective," says Anthony Richards, head of documents and sound at the Imperial War Museum in England. "They help us engage with history and put ourselves in the place of those soldiers."
