To understand how Renoir translated this study into his final painting, we created a tracing of the drawing to lay on top of “The Great Bathers” for direct comparison. We learned that Renoir wasn’t only making changes on the painted canvas—in this drawing, he rubbed out earlier positions of the right figure’s arm and the left figure’s head as he experimented with this complex figural arrangement.
