Photo by @クリス・バーカード | A little known fact is that, at 750 feet tall, the Great Sand Dunes of Colorado are the tallest dunes in North America. The dune field in the national park is 30 square miles in size and surrounded by jagged 14,000+ foot mountain peaks. Hiking up these behemoths is no easy task, especially with 30 miles per hour winds blowing in your face. What’s equally amazing is that from the dunes trails lead to forests, wetlands, and even alpine lakes– it’s a stunningly diverse area. Hiking the dunes and sand boarding down are both great options to explore the park, but my favorite was walking them at night under a bright moon. Photographing here was another great reminder of the sheer beauty of the parks scattered throughout the United States.
