Even though it was my first day on the job, I volunteered to get out early because this was June 23rd - the day I’d been waiting for all year. I met up with @tellemants and #waltflanagan at the #middletown movies and we packed into a sold out house for Tim Burton’s #Batman1989 on opening night - thus shaping both my character (I try to always be Batman) and my career (Walt, Bry and I were half of what would one day become the @comicbookmenamc)! The man who’d been Mr. Mom, @michaelkeatondouglas, embodied the agonized #brucewayne in the first of a long line of emo, cinematic Batmen. Nicholson’s performance as the top-billed #joker felt like it legitimized our #comicbook fandom (which was still not mainstream back in those days). #timburton gave us the #DarkKnight as we knew him from the page (albeit about 100% more kill-y) and suddenly, the Bat belonged to *everybody*. In the summer of ‘89, the classic oval symbol was omnipresent. You went from seeing it only in comic book stores to seeing it in malls (remember those?) and sporting events. The dual deaths of Bruce’s parents had not really been a thing outside of comic books until Burton borrowed the imagery of the falling pearls and the frightened little boy from the #frankmiller #darkknight. This was my favorite moviegoing experience back then, and would remain so until 4 years later, when I made my own movie. And in a weird twist of fate, 8 years after that night, I’d work with one of the producers of Batman, Jon Peters, on an ill-fated Superman movie that never happened. But I never lost love for this monumental movie - so much so that in 1997 when @jayandsilentbob met Batman himself, I insisted @jaymewes and I take a pic with #michaelkeaton. He was, after all, our hero. 30 years ago from this moment, I know exactly where I was: I was deeply in love with Batman. 30 years later, not much has changed.
