Homer’s ‘Iliad’ describes Troy as a great and powerful city and according to myth, the Trojan War ended with its destruction. Some believed the legendary settlement never existed, but others set out to search for the reality behind the myth.
#TroyExhibition will offer tantalising clues to the truth behind the mythical story, peeling back the archaeological layers to showcase the real ancient Troy.

@vaspap198237 Menelaos indeed existed. As well as in my initial statement I didn't consider that the poems were written way after the supposed facts, "mea culpa". But nowhere I say that the Acheans were not Greeks. Of course they were Greeks but only in the geographical and cultural sense. It could never be in terms of nationality because there wasn't a nation back then. That's what I meant. Less learned people usually think of it as Greeks vs Trojans as if Greece and Troy were countries in the modern notion but they were not. They all spoke Greek and share the same culture, even the Trojans, although outside of geographic Greece. That's why I used the word "Hellenistic" (which in fact comes from "Héllas", "Greece" in Greek). Ancient Greece was not only the continental territory and surrounding isles like the modern map but a vast area of influence on the Mediterranean Sea, being the most direct one the Eastern Mediterranean.

Historically, it seems that the city of Troy actually existed. But the Trojan war was nothing like discribed in Homer's poems, there's lots of fiction and myth on them. Modern historians think it was in fact, not a 10 year siege which ended with that trap of the horse and started because a Trojan prince kidnapted a "Greek" (it is highly inaccurate to use that expression since Greece that time was far from being a unified country) queen, the most beautiful woman in the world, but rather a series of conflicts (which probably lasted a decade) between the states from continental and insular Greece and the Hellenistic city of Troy in Asia Minor, a conflict of geostrategic nature. However that fight might have been so important and marked the day that poets decided to enhance (distort) the actual facts as a celebration, to turn the event into a legend for posteriority (and as you know, history is written by victors).

@iacobvs_sevla Helen of Troy the wife of King Menelaos is a historical figure who actually existed. You make a tragic mistake to assume that the Acheans were not Greeks. The word Hellenes first appears in this epic poem.Although at the time Greece was not a unified country it had several kingdoms indeed it is the first time that the Hellenes united for a common cause.Linear B which was deciphered in the 20th century proves that the language spoken at the time was Greek the epic poems of course were recorded at a latter time in 8th bc in geometric times. But they were passed down from generation to generation through oral speech.

Troy, like figuring out who built the place you lived in, the soul within the body of the work horse, aka, the person of craft and measure, and where they lived and who built their home. I have an idea for that. Actually. The cemetary navigation system which lists people who passed their positions and where they lived, funny idea, but cool if you want to know family history. Pitched it to some companies and governments. Never got a call or a message back. They must be busy. Lol

if you said to some ignorant folk that in a far away land in the desert that there are giant triangles with perfect mathematical & astronomical symetry made around 4000 years (or more) ago, people would have a hardtime believing it as well...
