Focusing on a detail of the foreground figures’ feet, you’ll notice that the flesh tones have a dark, mottled appearance and the lowest foot has an unexpected bluish hue. Swipe left to see the same detail view under ultraviolet light, highlighting a pattern of bright yellow-green. This coloring relates to varnish layers and the pattern shows that the coating is very uneven. The varnish has darkened with age, and thicker areas of the coating cast a dark yellowish tone over the surface, which is visible in normal light as patches on the flesh tones.  In the next image, infrared light penetrates through upper paint layers to reveal changes in the composition. The lowermost foot in this image appears half-submerged beneath the water, though Renoir later painted flesh tones on top and positioned this foot to hang in the air, just above the surface.
