During my recent visit to the Canadian Rockies, I received word that a black bear sow had a spirit/Kermode bear (very rare white morph) cub in tow. I looked around every tree, river, and meadow in search for the family, but came up empty handed. I did end up spotting a lot of grizzly and black bears, including this stunning blonde black bear male. He was busy between mating with a female and munching on grass and dandelions, but was one of the most beautiful black bears I had ever found. While spirit bears have a recessive mutant gene and can come from a true black colored bear, I was hypothesizing this blonde boar was the father as his coat was so light in color and was in the same area as the white cub. It’s a nice thought, but no way to know for sure!
