Photo by Ami Vitale @amivitale | Sandals pile up while pilgrims bathe in the Menik Ganga (a river flowing near to the Kataragama temple) for the annual Kataragama Esala festival in Sri Lanka. After having a bath, devotees walk across to the temple bearing offerings of flowers and fruit to the god to begin the Esala Kataragama. The town is sacred to Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, and indigenous Vedda people of Sri Lanka. I had the privilege of working in Sri Lanka for @ナショナルジオグラフィック as we looked at the memory of the civil war that ended in 2009.

himesha_wijekoon I'm from Sri Lanka. So I might correct one thing in the caption. As far as I know this town has nothing sacred for Muslims. No offense about Muslims. But just pointing a mistake.

yvathegardener Almost all pilgrims who go there takes a bath in the Menik Ganga takes to purify themselves that water is constantly flowing so I think it’s ok.
