Today I’m taking over the @unicef Instagram feed to introduce you to Fahiem and Fawad, an amazing father and son I was lucky enough to spend a few days with last month in South Africa. . Fawad explodes out the back door, his dark curls flopping back and forth with each excited step. Fahiem chases after his son, dry grass crunching underfoot, laughing as he squints in the bright midwinter sun. I struggle to keep the two in my camera’s viewfinder as they dart around the yard. Fawad, who lives with autism, doesn’t speak in words as we understand them. Instead, he communicates through musical sounds. He hums and intones happily as his father picks him up and swings him in dizzying circles. “Give daddy a kiss,” says Fahiem as the two of them whirl and play amid laundry lines crisscrossing the yard. . Much of what we do as UNICEF photographers is to document what’s not right with the situation of children. Poverty, malnutrition, displacement due to wars or earthquakes. Frequently the job is about finding moments of beauty amid horrific circumstances. This time was different. As Fawad leaned forward, resting his chin on his father’s, about to give him a kiss as their noses all but touched, I pressed the shutter button – feeling lucky to be documenting the boundless love between a father and his son. #EarlyMomentsMatter .
