Luis Alvarez, a retired New York City detective who recently urged Congress to extend #health coverage for those who, like him, responded to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, died on June 29. The 53-year-old traveled to Washington, D.C., to implore lawmakers on June 11 to reauthorize the September 11 Victim Compensation Fund. He was joined that day by former Daily Show host Jon Stewart, who condemned legislators who failed to show up for the testimony. About 16 years after the attacks, Alvarez was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, an illness linked to his time at Ground Zero. In his last interview with Fox News, Alvarez urged other first-responders to fight for benefits, even if they weren’t sick. "There’s workers out there who say, this isn’t going to happen to me, I’m OK, the time has passed. The time is not gonna pass," Alvarez said. "There’s gonna be more and more and more responders getting sick… just because you’re not sick now doesn’t mean you’re not going to get sick.” Read more at the link in bio. Broke my heart to see and hear his eloquent delivery of speech at a sparely attended congress hearing. May he be blessed and also be reunited with those he lived in the after life. We, in this one should acknowledge and hear his plight to help defend what he and so many thought important to fight for.

I'm not American and neither is anyone here in our Singapore datacenter, but we send out sympathies to this great man and to all the men and women who answered the call on 911. Hope the govt can change so that these brave responders will get the care and funding they need. ??

I wish the media would also show pics of him in healthier times to celebrate the happier times of his life. His heroism and personal suffering would be felt more by the people who might otherwise be too clueless to really appreciate what he sacrificed. ?????????

Disasters come and go. This debate makes first responders ask themselves: "should I kill myself for a victim next time there is a disaster?" After all, my country won't care what happens to me later

Why you Americans love to watch your poor and sick population humiliated and suffering is beyond us Europeans. Listen to Bernie and provide coverage for all your citizens. This is 2019, not 1919☠️
