Even though a lot of the principles have been consistent in my work for the last 30 years, the way that I was putting my ideas across in the pieces has evolved. I’d say that for the first 10 years of my career, I was really focused on just the concept of Phenomenology - putting an image out in public space that disrupts the usual flow of what you consume visually, and questions what dominates and controls public space. I was doing that through repetition, and I was also doing that through subverting and hijacking pre-existing imagery. Questioning propaganda by using propaganda was a big principle for me, but I wasn’t overtly political. I was mostly pushing the message, which is still important to me of questioning everything, and here’s an absurd image that makes you question things just in relation to - why is this here? What does it mean next to everything else it’s next to? - Shepard

You need to reboot Obey and go back to this, the new generation missed out on this foundation and also the culture is so new now, so different. A lot of it being because this worked
