'2016' depicts a boat sinking below the surface of the ocean. The seascape viewed from above mimics a photograph captured from a hovering press helicopter. #MaggiHambling painted this work in response to media images of asylum seekers in the Mediterranean Sea. ‘Boats were being abandoned by the traffickers and left to drift and disappear,’ she recalled. Hambling made this work over the course of 2016.
See the work on free display in Tate Britain's Walk Through British Art: #60Years Gallery.

My immediate question in this work is about the aestheticization of human suffering—which is problematically close to fetishization. It’s a pretty painting with nothing to suggest the real horror of forced migration. Horrific images themselves can tow the line between exploitation and righteous indignation—all in all, I’d rather see art by refugees themselves rather than presumably comfortable people expressing trite moral outrage to get attention.

Ah latching onto "migration" to promote painting, got it. Can she paint the traffickers the migrants paid $10k to attempt illegal entry?
