#Mayflies carpeting everything in sight along southern #LakeErie. The hatch season for these flies is typically May into early June but this years prolonged flooding has created an expanded hatching opportunity extending into July. May flies live a mere 24 hours once hatched and spend 99% of their lives as larva. During the hatch they provide a food source to fish, Birds, insects and a host of land mammals. The dead flies pile up in areas that are multiple feet deep! As gross and annoying as they may be to some, these flies are a sign of a healthy ecosystem. Photographed on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック

Growing up we always went to the fish fly festival (also known as the Bay-a-Rama festival). I great marker of the beginning of summer. It can get very stinky during fish fly season and they can gather on the roads under street lights, causing cars to slide through stop signs and having accidents. I don’t know if it’s true but I read that higher numbers of fish flys indicate better water quality.

We get them at our new place in the country, outside of Christchurch, New Zealand. We call them lake flies and they gave us such a shock when they first arrived. They had flooded into our bedroom upstairs in the evening in November, as our windows were open into the balmy evening. We doon learned to close all the windows before nightfall.

I live right next to Lake Erie in Michigan. The mayflies are everywhere. It makes spending time outside rough especially when the land on your mouth or feel them crawling on the back of your neck.

We called them "Canadian soldiers" when I was an Ohio lad, something passed along to us by the WWII vets, referring to their general haplessness...

You made them look beautiful. I suspect they are like the love bugs in Florida (where I'm from) when it comes to cars and such.
