While success on Everest is fine and dandy, climbing in the Himalaya comes with a cost. Scattered throughout the Khumbu are grim reminders of the human toll high altitude mountaineering extracts. Chortens, momentos erected by family and friends as reminders of lost loved ones are built by Sherpas and foreign guests alike. Jake Breitenbach was crushed by falling ice during the 1963 AMEE. His partner, Gil Roberts, had stopped to wipe the condensation from his glasses. Gil went on to work as an ER doctor in the Bay Area. As he was dying of cancer in 1999 he reached out to me, talking about what a bear survivor's guilt can be. At that point Alex Lowe, my climbing partner, had been killed in Tibet by an avalanche. Gil pointed out over a hamburger and milk shake that life is short and one should make the most of it. Scott Fischer lost his life in 1996. The tragedy of May 10 was a lesson that, collectively, we all learned from and one that changed the course of Himalayan climbing. While you guys are gone, you are not forgotten. #oneverest @conradclimber (back home in Montana)
